So you want to be a model?
I’ve worked with a lot of them over the past few years and the one thing I can tell you is it isn’t always about the looks. The most beautiful girl doesn’t necessarily make the best model. What does? Being able to move and project what the photographer is looking for. It is a lot like acting.
Case in point, I worked with another photographer teaching lighting workshops. He would bring in two girls for each class to model for the students. During one particular class we had a very beautiful brunette who was trying out for Playboy. The second model was cute and blonde, but not as strikingly beautiful as the brunette. At first, the photographers flocked to the brunette, wanting to shoot her first. That is, until the girls began to model. The blonde blew the brunette away with her modeling skills. She was simply amazing! Of all the models I’ve worked with she really stands out in my mind. It didn’t take long for all the photographers to notice how good she was and they all started crowding, wanting to shoot her. We eventually had split the students up and make some of them go back to photograph the brunette. Knowing how to move in front of the camera and revealing your personality goes much further than a pretty face alone.
I still occasionally use models for personal projects. Feel free to send me your photo if you would like to be considered for one of these shoots. You never know what look I’m searching for. Models should always have a clear head shot without a lot of makeup and a full length body shot so photographers can see what you look like. If you are interested in modeling you can set up a profile on sites like www.modelmayhem.com , which is where we found most of our models for the workshops.
